So you want to learn how to play the piano. If you want to be the next protégée and be the Chopin of this generation, well, learning the piano basics is the place to start. Now if you are just a music lover and think that playing the piano is one of the most therapeutic ways to relieve stress, then you are also welcome to learn. Piano for beginners can be a bit confusing and even intimidating.
The Piano an Extension of your Body
After all, the piano is a grand musical instrument. There is this long line of black and white keys and some keys for the foot as well. Truth be told, learning the piano is no walk in the park. You cannot take lessons today and expect to be awesome at it tomorrow. However, with perseverance, you will discover that it gets easier and easier as your body becomes accustomed to the instrument. Professional pianists would even say that the piano is already the extension of their body and they know it as much as they know themselves.
So let us start with the basics. What is piano for beginners? These are some things that all starting protégées must learn.
Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La Ti, Do
If you want to learn the keys, it is best for you to recall the song from the famous movie, Sound of Music. Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do. These syllables have a corresponding letter – C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C. Now if you want to easily remember the notes of the bass clef, remember the phrase “Every Good Boy Does Fine” or E, G, B, D. A full piano has a total of 88 keys. Start playing from the middle C.
Rhythm is Important
However, notes are not the be all and end all of music. Rhythm is a very important thing. Remember the song “I’ve Got Rhythm”? The next line is “I’ve got music”. A person who has no rhythm cannot make music and so you must also learn important notations. A whole note has 4 counts while a half note has 2. A quarter note has 1 and an 8th note has half a count. The rhythm played with proper notes and punctuated by silence makes a wonderful musical piece.
Learn the Chords
Aside from the notes, an important thing that students must learn when studying piano for beginners are chords. Chords are usually played by the left hand on the F clefs. Chords are just like notes (C, D, E, F, G, A, B) but have fuller sounds. You can learn the basic chords easily online. However, chords can also be broken and so there is such a thing as the chord C and a variant which is C minor. There are also other ways to play the C chord to add more flavor just as C7.
Piano for beginners usually consists of learning notes, chords, rhythm and corresponding silences. Start practicing with simple tunes and work your way to more complicated ones as your skill improves.
